Departments

Store Operations
The Store Operations Department is responsible for all operational activities related to NLC’s retail stores. Operational activities are split into corporate stores and Express operations. Key areas of activity for the department include merchandising, inventory management, social responsibility, human resource management, sales and customer service.

Corporate Store Operations is committed to offering a broad product selection with a highly trained and knowledgeable group of employees in a modern, friendly environment that will enhance every customer’s shopping experience. Express Store Operations is committed to offering core product selection in a convenient, friendly environment that will enhance every customer’s shopping experience. We will continue to invest in our people while strengthening our commitment with our business partners to ensure excellent management of the beverage alcohol industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Supply Chain
The Supply Chain department of the NLC is responsible for ensuring an optimum product supply to meet the alcoholic beverage demand in the NL marketplace. Product is purchased from more than 30 countries and 400 suppliers worldwide. The department coordinates the purchase, pick-up, consolidation, shipping, warehousing and distribution of all products to our corporate stores and agency outlets.

Under the umbrella of the supply chain department, NLC's bottling plant bottles a variety of quality spirits for distribution to markets worldwide. Among our offerings are International Rum Festival medalists Screech, Old Sam, and Cabot Tower Rum.

Marketing/Merchandising
The Marketing/Merchandising Department of the NLC works very closely with the Supply Chain and Store Operations Departments to enhance our customer’s shopping experience and promote new products and services. All activities of this department are directed towards ensuring that NLC stores have the right product mix available to our customers.

The Marketing/Merchandising Department assumes responsibility for supplier relations, category management, retail promotional programs and store image and decor. As well, major exhibitions such as WineFest and SpiritFest are developed and organized by this department.

Corporate Services
The Corporate Services Department is comprised of four divisions: Social Responsibility; Regulatory Services; Records Management and Corporate Projects.

Corporate Services is responsible for Social Responsibility programs and initiatives that deliver public education programs encouraging responsible drinking practices. It also involves partnerships with various community groups and suppliers in delivering these programs.

The Regulatory Services division of Corporate Services is responsible for administering the Liquor Control Act, the Liquor Licensing Regulations and the Smoke-free Environment Act. Regulatory Services is responsible for making recommendations on legislation and policy matters concerning licensing and enforcement issues.

The Records Management division of Corporate Services is responsible for developing and maintaining a records management program for the Corporation. It provides records management services and support to all areas of the Corporation, including consultation on such issues as record classification, storage, retention scheduling and disposal. Records Management division also provides education and training to appropriate personnel in the various departments in proper records management practices.

The Corporate Projects division is responsible for coordinating, planning, developing, implementing and executing corporate projects for the Corporate Services Department and other projects specific departments.

Under the umbrella of the Corporate Services department it is responsible for coordinating the Access to Information and Protection Act (ATIPP) for the entire Corporation, and represents the Corporation on the committee for the Government Red Tape Reduction Initiative.

Human Resources

Information Technology
The Information Technology department is responsible for providing various information technology services to all areas of the Corporation. Theses areas include the corporate head office, central warehouse, bottling plant and the retail stores throughout the province.

The department includes a total staff complement of 17 positions and is divided into two functional streams – Technical Services and Application Development and Support.

The Technical Services group provides all infrastructure and desktop related service for the Corporation i.e. all services related to the AS/400 mainframe, servers, PCs, peripherals, routers, switches and any associated operating system software

The Application Development and Support group provides all services related to the development, enhancement, maintenance and support of all corporate software applications in use by the various departments.

Finance
The Finance Department’s goal is to provide accurate, timely financial information in an effective and consistent fashion. The core functions of the department include: accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation’s, customs, excise, product pricing, purchasing and statistics.

Enterprise Risk Management
The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department’s objective is to oversee and conduct independent, objective assurance and consulting activities designed to add value and improve the Corporation’s operations. ERM helps the Corporation accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.

The ERM department prepares an annual risk-based audit plan which is used to assist the organization by identifying and evaluating the Corporation's exposure to risk. The risk based plan determines the priorities of the internal audit activities and ensures congruence with the Corporation’s goals and objectives.

The purpose, authority and responsibility of the ERM department is formally defined in a charter which has been approved by the NLC’s Board of Directors. The ERM department reports functionally to the audit committee of the Board of Directors.

Facility Management & Administration
NLC's Facility Management & Administration department manages, develops and supports the corporate retail stores throughout the province, the corporate office in St. John's as well as auxiliary property essential for daily operations. The management of NLC property includes planning, preparation, development, scheduling and forecasting.

The property department has very specific goals including the following.

  • Create a functional, entertaining shopping environment.
  • Improve service for consumers, corporate departments and employees.
  • Provide consistency to all agency stores through design and enhancement.
  • Increase the awareness of customer and employee responsibility.
  • Decrease operating costs.
  • Reduce dead space in warehouse and stores.
  • Design workspaces to maximize productivity.
